Companies including the likes of BMW, Daimler, Ericsson, and Deutsche Telekom are pressuring the EU to back a connected car standard.
The companies want the European Commission to put its weight behind the C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) standard instead of the WiFi-based alternative ITS-G5.
By adopting C-V2X, the companies believe Europe will be in a better position to speed up the rollout of 5G networks.
In a letter addressed to EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and other commissioners, the companies say ITS-G5 “has no relationship to 5G technology and certainly no evolutionary path toward compatibility with 5G".
The firms also believe the adoption of C-V2X will enable EU carmakers to better compete in a global market.
"[ITS-G5] places Europe at an economic disadvantage compared with other regions of the world – including China and the United States – where C-V2X is emerging as a strong technology candidate for C-ITS (Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems)," the companies said.
Other signatories of the letter include; Huawei, Ford, Qualcomm, Intel, Nokia, Samsung, Telefonica, Vodafone, Savari, PSA Groupe, and SAIC Motor.
The EU doesn’t want Europe to be left behind when it comes to 5G.
Rules are currently being considered for connected cars, a market expected to be worth billions of euros. Connected cars will also generate new revenue stream opportunities for telecoms operators and equipment makers.
The EU Commission expects to have legislation prepared by the end of the year.
