The IoT could help the UK cut 17.4M tonnes of CO2

A report from Vodafone and WPI Economics has found that emerging technologies like the IoT and 5G could help the UK cut 17.4 million tonnes of CO2 per year.

Earlier this year, the UK enshrined in law a target to slash carbon emissions by 78 percent by 2035 as part of a bid to achieve net-zero by 2050. Achieving the UK’s target, and hopefully exceeding it, will require taking advantage of every possible tool.

Smart cities will help fight climate change but more awareness is needed

Smart cities will be key in tackling climate change, but research suggests that public awareness of that fact is low.

According to research from Milestone Systems, 80 percent of Brits want their local authority to take more action to fight climate change. 230 councils in the UK have already declared a climate emergency in their regions.

However, under half (47%) of Brits are aware that increased use of data and technology can help in delivering improvements that can...

DHL is building the first all-electric air cargo network

Logistics giant DHL has announced plans to build the world’s first all-electric air cargo network in partnership with Seattle-based Eviation.

World leaders are set to gather in Glasgow, UK in November for the UN Climate Change Conference where it’s hoped the international community can agree on national measures to help address the global crisis. However, individual businesses will also need to take action for any meaningful impact.

As of 2016, heavy transportation...

Dryad Networks launches Silvanet IoT solution for ultra-early wildfire detection

Environmental startup Dryad Networks has launched Silvanet, its large-scale IoT network for the ultra-early detection of wildfires.

Wildfires are devastating, not just for the lives and habitats they destroy, but also for the long-term damage they cause through massive CO2 emissions while simultaneously destroying the vegetation that lowers carbon.

The US alone is suffering its worst wildfire season in a decade and the 2019-2020 Australian bushfire season was the second...

AWS announces IoT partnership with farming solutions provider Yara

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a strategic IoT partnership with farming solutions provider Yara.

Optimising crop production is vital to ensure there’s enough food to feed an increasingly overpopulated world while minimising the environmental costs. IoT technologies, as usual, will play a key role.

Marcus Furuholmen, VP of Digital Production at Yara, said:

“Yara’s vision is simple yet extremely powerful. Through our worldwide operations we seek to...

Lime is spending $50 million on a major expansion of its e-bikes

Micromobility firm Lime is spending $50 million to expand and enhance its e-bike network.

Lime started its journey with e-bikes – in fact, it even used to be called LimeBike – but has since become known for its iconic e-scooters where it’s put most of its effort in recent years. Now, the company is returning to where it started.

The $50 million investment in Lime’s shared electric bicycle network will add a new model of bike, double the number of the green (quite...

DCC’s smart meter network passes 10 million milestone

The Data Communications Company (DCC) says it has now connected over 10 million smart meters in the UK.

DCC was granted a licence to build and manage its network in 2013 by the Department for Energy and Climate Change, now part of the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Angus Flett, CEO of DCC, said:

“This milestone shows that the whole sector has progressed hugely over the last year in digitising Britain’s energy system....

AMP Robotics raises $55 million to advance its waste-reducing mission

Denver-based AMP Robotics has raised $55 million for its AI-powered system which aims to reduce global waste.

Coming off the hottest year on record, with the US experiencing its first-ever “gigafire”, the worst Amazon fires in a decade, and devastating typhoons swamping the Indian subcontinent – to name just a few climate-related disasters – it’s more clear than ever we need to turn words into actions when it comes to reducing our environmental...

Opinion: Key trends that will drive IoT technology development

At last month’s Sigfox Connect, Benjamin Mazet, Product Management Director at Sigfox presented on “Key trends that will drive IoT technology development.”

He believes that the key challenge for the next 18-24 months is to improve IoT technology in order to fully benefit from the digital transformation provided by this new industrial revolution.

The IoT is considered part of the fourth, or new, industrial revolution by connecting the physical and the digital...

Dryad Networks is using the ‘Internet of Trees’ to fight wildfires

Dryad Networks is deploying IoT technology to help prevent the devastation caused by wildfires.

This year alone, we’ve had the ongoing wildfire in California that has now set the unwanted record of most acres burned in a single year, the wildfires in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, and another of Australia’s bushfires—to name just a few.

Each case leaves a trail of destruction in its wake with environmental, social, and economic impacts. A report in July estimated...
