Gartner highlights top 10 IoT technologies for 2017 and 2018

The latest research note from analyst house Gartner has zeroed in on 10 IoT technologies that will play a key role in an organisation’s development, including low power networks, operating systems, and device management capabilities.

The full list of trends includes IoT security; IoT analytics; IoT device management; low-power, short-range IoT networks; low-power, wide-area networks; IoT processors; IoT operating systems; Event stream processing; IoT platforms; and IoT standards and ecosystems.

Gartner vice president and distinguished analyst Nick Jones said: “The IoT demands an extensive range of new technologies and skills that many organisations have yet to master. A recurring theme in the IoT space is the immaturity of technologies and services and of the vendors providing them. Architecting for this immaturity and managing the risk it creates will be a key challenge for organisations exploiting the IoT. In many technology areas, lack of skills will also pose significant challenges.”

These technologies will have an overarching impact on organisations, impacting business strategy, risk management and a large range of technical areas such as architecture and network design.

IoT business models will make the best use of information gleaned, however, new analytic tools and algorithms are required as data volumes increase through 2021. As regards device management, tools will have to be capable of managing and monitoring thousands and perhaps even millions of devices. Low-power, short-range networks will have a major share of wireless IoT connectivity through 2025, surpassing connections using wide-area IoT networks. Meanwhile, emerging standards such as Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) will likely play a major role in the wide-area arena though the first low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs) were based on proprietary technologies.

Jones added: “Experienced IoT security specialists are scarce, and security solutions are currently fragmented and involve multiple vendors. New threats will emerge through 2021 as hackers find new ways to attack IoT devices and protocols, so long-lived ‘things’ may need updatable hardware and software to adapt during their life span.”
