AT&T is planning to launch its new LTE-M network in the San Francisco market as a pilot project.
Slated to start in November 2016, the LTE-M technology is said to connect a wide variety of IoT solutions such as smart utility meters, asset monitoring, vending machines, alarm systems, fleet, heavy equipment, mHealth and wearables.
The implementation of the LTE-M technology will result in lower costs for modules that connect IoT devices to the LTE network; longer battery life up to ten years for certain IoT-enabled devices; and better coverage for IoT devices underground and deep inside buildings.
Five other companies will participate in the project. Badger Meter will analyse how the IoT-supported LTE-M network may be used to enhance communications for smart water devices, while CalAmp will explore how the network can help companies efficiently manage their connected vehicles and assets and Capstone Metering will demonstrate how LTE-M can improve smart cities sensor technologies.
PepsiCo will examine and test ways that sensors can improve the in-store experience with smart vending solutions for the thousands of PepsiCo products, while Samsung will evaluate an LTE-M based solutions to enhance performance for consumer solutions, which may include wearables or other consumer devices.
Companies such as Altair, Ericsson, Qualcomm Technologies, Sierra Wireless, u-blox, Wistron NeWeb Corp. (WNC), and Xirgo Technologies will also be a part of the LTE-M pilot.
