A new partnership between the UK Government, Glasgow City Council, and the Smart Things Accelerator Centre (STAC) aims to transform Glasgow into Europe’s largest IoT innovation hub.

The collaboration centres around a £2.5 million investment into a state-of-the-art 250-desk facility named “thebeyond” at SkyPark, Finnieston in Glasgow. The facility will serve as an accelerator for Glasgow’s burgeoning IoT industry.

Partners believe Glasgow can become a global leader in emerging technologies like drones, robotics, AI, IoT, nanotech, medtech, and cleantech over the next few decades. These technologies promise to revolutionise industries while yielding substantial economic, social, and environmental benefits.

Building on STAC’s momentum, projections forecast Glasgow evolving into an innovation leader focused on industrial, lifestyle, health, and sustainability technologies. The goal is for thebeyond to house 100 tech companies by the end of 2024.

The initiative has the support of industry veterans from leading organisations including Dyson, Plexus, Meta, Blackberry, Motorola, and Volvo. Their decades of experience will prove invaluable for guiding Glasgow’s startups to compete on the global stage.

Paul Wilson, CEO and Co-Founder of STAC, believes “Glasgow can be a powerhouse in the key technologies that will enhance life and industry for the next decades.” Through thebeyond, Glasgow will “gain a reputation and attract international investment.”

Councillor Ricky Bell, Deputy Leader of Glasgow City Council, said the collaboration “will help Glasgow become a leading technology-driven city, with our services and buildings powered by homegrown innovation.” It will also “bring a great number of new jobs and careers in this sector.”

With top talent from local universities, a collaborative spirit, and now proper funding and facilities, Glasgow has the potential to become a global leader in IoT and other critical emerging technologies over the coming years.
