The largest attack on IoT devices occurred just a few weeks ago when hackers hijacked more than 1 million connected Things and used them to take down the website of cybersecurity reporter Brian Krebs through a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. This event was unprecedented both for its size and its method. Historically, hackers wage a DDoS attack by tricking a faulty server into responding to traffic levels that do not exist. This, in-turn, causes the server to generate multiple response packets for each packet received, amplifying the fire power of each request and eventually crashing the site.
