Inmarsat provides satellite IoT connectivity for rural hydroelectric power stations

Satellite operator Inmarsat is providing IoT connectivity for rural hydroelectric power stations in Wales.

The RWE-owned power stations in the mountainous region of Snowdonia in northwest Wales harness water to generate renewable electricity.

Snowdonia is the wettest area in Wales, with average annual rainfall totals exceeding 3000mm—making the region comparable to the English Lake District or the western Highlands of Scotland.

The region is an ideal location...

Inmarsat: IoT to overtake cloud computing as primary Industry 4.0 technology

Research from Inmarsat has found that investment in the IoT is set to overtake cloud computing and other digital transformation technologies.

The IoT can hardly be considered an “emerging technology” anymore. Between 2017 and 2020, IoT investments account for an average of 7 percent of an organisation’s IT budget. Over the next three years, businesses expect to increase their IoT budgets to 10 percent.

Here’s how that compares to planned investment in other...

Berg Insight: Global satellite IoT subscriber base to hit 15.7M by 2025

Analysts from Berg Insight expect the global satellite IoT subscriber base to hit 15.7 million by 2025 after surpassing 3.4 million in 2020.

The researchers predict the number of subscribers will increase at the compound annual growth rate of 35.8 percent.

IoT devices continue to proliferate rapidly. Satellites aren’t heading into orbit at quite the same pace but launches have certainly increased in tempo as an increasing number of companies seek to secure their slice...

IIoT adoption is accelerating in response to COVID-19

Research from satellite giant Inmarsat has found a rapid acceleration in IIoT deployments in response to COVID-19.

Over three-quarters (77%) of the surveyed organisations have now deployed at least one IoT project. 41 percent of those businesses did so in the twelve-month period from the second quarter of 2020, a period that will enter the history books as when COVID-19 gripped the world.

Aside from the deaths and long-term health complications that COVID-19 caused, the...

Inmarsat launches the first global UAV connectivity solution

Satellite giant Inmarsat has launched Velaris, the first global connectivity solution for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

Velaris is powered by Inmarsat’s ELERA satellite network and enables commercial UAVs to fly beyond visual sight. The solution also provides UAV operators with access to key applications like real-time air traffic monitoring to ensure the safety of all commercial airspace users.

Anthony Spouncer, Inmarsat’s Senior Director of UAVs and Unmanned...

Inmarsat launches programme to boost availability of satellite IoT solutions

Inmarsat has launched its Application and Solution Provider (ASP) programme with the intention of boosting adoption for IoT purposes.

ASP creates an ecosystem for software, hardware, and solution providers that enables access to Inmarsat’s global satellite connectivity and helps companies to expand into new sectors and geographies.
