The UK is experiencing a spike in demand for job skills related to the Internet of Things (IoT), according to figures from IT Jobs Watch and digital security firm Gemalto.

This leads to the inevitable question: what skills in particular are classified as being beneficial in an IoT-enabled world? Gemalto argues the focus is around cybersecurity, data management, and data analysis.

According to the figures, the number of postings in the UK for positions requiring IoT skills has increased by 70% over the past year. Cybersecurity roles overall rose by 73%, with security architecture and security engineer jobs going up by 43% and 9% respectively, while vacancies requiring knowledge of artificial intelligence have gone up 300%.

With regard to data management, the figures note the median salary for a data manager grew by 7%, while the number of permanent jobs which featured data analytics as part of its skillset rose by 15% in the rankings.

Nicolas Chalvin, vice president of M2M and IoT solutions and services at Gemalto, notes the reasons why job roles such as IoT architect and IoT engineer are being created.

“Growth in smart cities is building interest in IoT but in order to get ahead, companies need to be looking for a range of skills, not just one, to set them apart from their competitors,” he said. “Given the growth in demand for IoT knowledge, it’s encouraging to see demand for cybersecurity skills also on the increase – showing that organisations appreciate the need to secure the data they collect.

“As more IoT projects go live, keeping these secure is vital to ensuring consumer confidence in their usage, protecting confidential data and making them a success,” Chalvin added.

As technologies become more pervasive and noticed in the enterprise, it’s inevitable that job postings will go up with it. DevOps experience is a classic example of this. Writing for sister publication CloudTech in June, cloud provider Logicworks wrote that DevOps engineers were “notoriously difficult to find”.
